What Duration® FLEX® Is

TruDefinition® Duration® FLEX® is Owens Corning’s SBS polymer-modified shingle. The rubber-like SBS modifier is blended into the asphalt so the shingle stays pliable instead of going brittle — which is what lets it absorb a hail strike and recover rather than fracturing.

  • UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available
  • SBS polymer modification for flexibility across temperature swings
  • SureNail® Technology nailing strip for wind resistance
  • Insurance premium discounts — most Colorado carriers discount annually for a documented Class 4 roof

FLEX vs. STORM: The Honest Comparison

Both are SBS-modified Class 4 shingles from the same manufacturer, and both qualify for the same insurance discount. The practical differences are cold-weather pliability, color availability, and — the one that actually decides most jobs — what’s genuinely in stock at our Longmont supplier the week you’re ready to order.

Where FLEX earns its place: Colorado’s freeze-thaw cycling is brutal on roofing. A shingle that stays flexible at low temperatures resists the cracking that ends brittle roofs early — relevant on foothills and higher-elevation properties around Lyons, Nederland, Estes Park, and the canyon corridors west of Longmont and Boulder.

We won’t push you toward one over the other on spec-sheet margins. We’ll quote whichever is available in the color you want, at the better price, in the timeframe you need. See Duration STORM® here →

The Insurance Math

Upgrading to Class 4 typically adds a few thousand dollars on a Front Range home. It pays back two ways: an annual premium discount most Colorado carriers offer for a documented UL 2218 Class 4 roof, and every future deductible you don’t pay because ordinary Front Range hail stops being a replacement event. We provide the manufacturer certification your insurer needs to apply the discount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Duration FLEX cost installed?

Class 4 impact-resistant installation runs about $1,000 per square in the Longmont/Boulder market for 2026 — roughly $25,000 on a standard 25-square home. Your written quote is a fixed price after measurement and decking inspection.

Does FLEX qualify for the same insurance discount as STORM?

Yes — the discount is tied to the UL 2218 Class 4 rating, not the product name. Both qualify. Confirm the exact discount with your agent, since it varies by carrier.

Can I use my hail claim to upgrade to FLEX?

Yes, and it’s the cheapest moment to do it. Insurance funds replacement of what you had; you pay only the material difference to step up to Class 4.

Insurance-claim roofing — how we handle itUnder Colorado's Residential Roofing Bill of Rights, you may cancel for a full deposit refund within 72 hours of signing — and, if your insurer denies the claim, within 72 hours of that denial. Once that window closes, your deposit is committed to your project and is non-refundable except as required by law for work not yet performed. We never collect your insurance deductible upfront — it's due at completion — and by law we cannot waive or rebate it.

Colorado Class 4 shingle insurance discount: what the law says

  • Colorado law (CRS 10-4-110.8) requires insurers to factor impact-resistant roofing into their premium rates — the legal basis for the Class 4 discount.
  • In June 2026, SB26-155 created the Strengthen Colorado Homes Enterprise; starting 2027, insurers must prove resilient-roof savings actually reach homeowners.
  • Carrier discounts typically run 15–35% (about 28% on average), applied to the dwelling or the wind/hail portion of the premium.
  • Class 4 is the top rating under UL 2218: a 2-inch steel ball dropped 20 ft must not crack the shingle.
  • The upgrade typically pays for itself in roughly 3–7 years through premium savings.
