What Standing Seam Actually Is
Standing seam is a concealed-fastener metal system. Panels run vertically from ridge to eave and lock together at raised seams, with the fasteners hidden underneath. That’s the critical difference from exposed-fastener corrugated metal, where hundreds of screw penetrations and rubber washers become leak points as they age.
- 50+ year service life โ roughly double a premium asphalt roof
- Class 4 impact rating available on many panel profiles and gauges
- Class A fire rating โ significant in Colorado’s wildland-urban interface
- Sheds snow rather than holding it, reducing ice dam formation
- No exposed fasteners to back out, corrode, or leak
Where It Earns Its Cost in Colorado
We install standing seam most often on foothills and canyon properties west of Boulder, Lyons, and Longmont, where fire rating and snow load both matter; on modern architecture in Boulder, Niwot, and Erie; and on low-slope sections where asphalt shingles aren’t rated to perform.
Honest caveat on hail: metal resists puncture extremely well, but it dents. On a Class 4 panel the denting is cosmetic and doesn’t compromise the roof โ but if perfectly smooth panels are what you’re paying for, understand that Front Range hail will eventually mark them. Some homeowners choose a textured or striated profile specifically to hide it. We’ll show you both.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does standing seam cost in Colorado?
About $1,200 per square installed on the Front Range in 2026, depending on gauge, panel profile, and roof complexity โ roughly two to three times asphalt. The tradeoff is a roof you likely never replace again.
Will insurance pay to upgrade to metal after hail?
Insurance funds replacement of comparable materials. If you had asphalt, the insurer pays asphalt value and you cover the difference. That’s still the cheapest moment to make the jump.
Is a metal roof loud in rain or hail?
Far less than people expect. Installed over solid decking with underlayment and attic insulation beneath, it’s comparable to asphalt. The noise reputation comes from barn roofs over open purlins.
Standing seam or Class 4 asphalt?
If you’re staying in the home long-term or fire rating matters at your address, metal. If you want the best cost-to-hail-performance ratio, Class 4 asphalt. We quote both without steering you.
