Is Hail Damage Covered by Homeowners Insurance in Colorado?

Yes. In almost all cases, standard Colorado homeowners insurance covers sudden hail damage to your roof, siding, gutters, and other exterior surfaces as a covered peril — subject to your deductible. Colorado sits in one of the most hail-prone regions in the country, so nearly every standard policy written here treats wind and hail as covered events. The main exceptions are cosmetic-damage exclusions (some newer policies), pre-existing or neglected damage, and claims filed long after the storm.

What your policy typically covers

  • Roof: shingle bruising, cracking, and granule loss from hail impact
  • Exterior: siding, gutters, downspouts, fascia, and soft metals
  • Skylights and windows: impact damage and seal failures
  • Detached structures: sheds, detached garages, fences (often under the same policy)

Two things that decide what you actually get paid

Your deductible. Many Colorado policies use a separate wind/hail deductible — often 1% to 5% of your home’s insured value rather than a flat dollar amount. On a $500,000 home, a 2% hail deductible is $10,000, so it’s worth knowing yours before you file.

RCV vs. ACV. A Replacement Cost Value policy pays what it costs to replace your roof today. An Actual Cash Value policy subtracts depreciation for the roof’s age. Older roofs on ACV policies pay out less, which is one more reason to file promptly rather than let damage age.

What can get a claim denied

  • Waiting too long — most Colorado policies expect claims within a year of the storm
  • Cosmetic-only damage on a policy with a cosmetic exclusion
  • Damage the adjuster attributes to age, wear, or prior neglect
  • No documentation tying the damage to a specific covered storm date

That last point is where a licensed local contractor earns their keep. We document the storm date against National Weather Service records, inspect the roof up close, and give you a written damage report your insurer can act on — the same file we’d bring to meet your adjuster.

Common questions

Will filing a hail claim raise my rates?

Hail is a weather event, not driver error. Insurers generally can’t single you out for a rate increase over a regional storm claim, though widespread storms can raise rates across a whole area regardless of whether you filed.

How long do I have to file?

Check your policy, but most Colorado carriers want the claim within 12 months of the date of loss. Sooner is always better — evidence is fresher and depreciation is lower.

Do I need an inspection before I file?

It helps. A free professional inspection tells you whether you have real, claimable damage before you open a claim — so you’re not filing on damage that won’t hold up, or missing damage you didn’t know was there.
